The Wallace and Frick Collections And their tantalising connections with Knole
Hilary Williams
Thursday 22 February 2018

This lecture by Hilary Williams will explore an era where collecting was at the height of fashion. and we will discover the personalities who helped form these famous collections and how the Wallace Collection in London influenced the connoisseurship which led to the formation of the Frick Collection, New York. How was that? Firstly, there was an international circle of collectors including Baron Ferdinand von Rothschild JP Morgan, the Astors, Isabella Stewart Gardner and others of the American ‘Gilded Age’. Secondly, an employee of the Wallace was hired by American industrialist Henry Clay Frick, to help make a superb collection. Then Frick left his fortune to the mother of Vita Sackville-West.
